COGAT Maj. Gen. Yoav (Poly) Mordechai met today with UN Secretary General, Mr. António Guterres

Today, August 28th, 2017, the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, Maj. Gen. Yoav (Poly) Mordechai, met with the UN Secretary General, Mr. António Guterres, during his first visit to Israel since taking office.

The meeting occurred with the participation of UN envoy to the Middle East, Mr. Nikolay Mladenov, the UN's Humanitarian Coordinator for the Territories, Mr. Robert Piper, the General Commissioner of UNRWA, Mr. Pierre Krähenbühl, the UN Secretary General's senior team as well as Israel's Ambassador to the UN, Mr. Danny Danon and representatives of Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Coordinator briefed the UN Secretary General giving a strategic and general overview of the situation in the civil, economic and security fields in the Gaza Strip. This included an update on the progress of the Gaza Reconstruction Mechanism, which is a joint initiative between Israel, the UN and the Palestinian Authority.

The Coordinator presented to the UN Secretary General Hamas' attempts to exploit the humanitarian aid provided by Israel to the Strip. He emphasized Hamas' ongoing effort to exploit the international organizations activities in order to harm the State of Israel as exposed in a number of cases over the past year. Within this, the Coordinator emphasized the holding of two missing IDF soldiers, 1st Lieutenant Hadar Goldin and Staff Sergeant Oron Shaul, alongside additional Israeli citizens by the terror organization Hamas, which makes it difficult for Israel to run a broad civil policy to assist the residents of Gaza.

"The terror organization Hamas does not hesitate at all and repeatedly exploits the Gazan residents by attempting to take advantage of Israel's assistance, despite the severe civil hardships in the Strip", said Maj. Gen. Mordechai. He also noted that "Hamas collects an estimated 100 million NIS per month from Gazan residents while the price of its internal conflict with the Palestinian Authority falls on the back of the Strip's residents first and foremost."

In addition, the Maj. Gen. Mordechai presented the Israeli civil efforts being made to assist the Syrian population at the Golan Heights border. He also held a briefing on main projects promoted by COGAT in Judea and Samaria.

The UN Secretary General thanked the coordinator for their meeting, and noted that the cooperation between the UN and Israel is important and effective.
